
The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ), with modest financial support from the Lotteries and Gaming Board, is thrilled to announce a Call for Entries for its Short Film Grant Funding. This initiative is part of the robust implementation of the Zimbabwe Film Strategy, launched in the last quarter of 2024, following the declaration of 2024 as “The Year of Film.”
The grant aims to empower Zimbabwean filmmakers to produce *three exceptional short films* that resonate with the Zimbabwean experience, narrating authentic stories through the lens of local talent. The winning films will form part of a national film repository and be showcased at scheduled film festivals both nationally and internationally.
Background
The Zimbabwe Film Strategy was born out of the need to revitalize the country’s film industry and provide a platform for local creatives to thrive. The NACZ, in collaboration with the Lotteries and Gaming Board, is committed to fostering innovative storytelling and supporting filmmakers in bringing their visions to life.
This grant is a direct response to the calls from the film sector for more opportunities and resources. It is designed to create an enabling environment for filmmakers, particularly women, to contribute to the growth of Zimbabwe’s creative economy.
Criteria for Applicants
To qualify for the grant, applicants must meet the following conditions:
1. Proven Capacity: Demonstrable ability to produce a short film, supported by traceable references from recognized entities such as ZBC/TV, 3KTV, NRTV, ZTN or similar organizations.
2. Equipment: Proof of ownership of film production equipment or the ability to access such equipment.
3. Documentation:Ability to provide a treatment, synopsis, budget, and shooting schedule as part of the application.
4. Membership: Membership in a recognized film organization or association registered with the NACZ.
5. References: Provable references from previous work or collaborations.
6. New Production: The proposed short film must be a new production, with a maximum duration of 20 minutes.
Eligibility
The grant is open to Zimbabwean filmmakers, including permanent residents, who meet the above criteria. Female filmmakers are especially encouraged to apply, as the NACZ is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the industry.
Adjudication Process
A panel of five seasoned industry experts will evaluate submissions based on a stipulated methodology informed by the conditions of entry. The adjudication process will ensure fairness, transparency, and alignment with the goals of the Zimbabwe Film Strategy.

Grant Details
– Each successful submission will receive a maximum of USD 2,000, disbursed through an arrangement with Empower Bank.
