Charly Blacks Speaks On Zim Dancehall

Charly Black

As the genre has been criticized by many people as being fake, bubble gum music with no future, it took the so-called real Dancehall artist to endorse the genre as real dancehall music. The Jamaican Dancehall superstar Charly Black who made a sterling performance at Long Cheng Plaza last night endorsed Zimdancehall artistes saying that they are doing real dancehall music albeit a different language. Responding to a question during his interview on ZiFM Stereo on Thursday night, he was asked whether he knew anything about Zimdancehall, the Wine and Kotch hit maker said, “I don’t know much about Zimbabwe music but I have heard Souljah Love and Seh Calaz sing. It is dancehall being sung in a different language. They sing dancehall so I don’t know if you call it with another name but to me it’s dancehall.”

His response goes a long way in authenticating the genre which has been criticized by many as bubble gum music. The genre which has been lured by violent lyrics and drug abuse has been said to have no future just like the so-called urban grooves (though debatable). However, it seems as if all those speculations may not come to pass as the Zimdancehall artists are maturing day by day. Artists like Tocky Vibes and Ras Caleb has come on the scene with some touching positive message which has even caught the eyes of those who didn’t want to hear anything about the genre. So should the term Zimdancehall continue to be used or not? Maybe if we had used Dancehall it would have been noticed internationally (food for thought).
On another note it’s all good news for the Zimdancehall fans as two of the biggest rivals in the genre have joined forces. Seh Calaz and Souljah Love who have not seen eye to eye for at least two years now have now resolved their issues thanks to the Bodyslam president who was the mediator. Seh Calaz and Souljah Love who has exchanged violent and harsh lyrics over the past two years are now in good books. The duo are also the ones who caused havoc at the famous Sting Clash which took place last year as they almost exchanged blows on stage which resulted in teargas being fired and many people getting hurt. Seh Calaz and Souljah Love shared the stage last night at the Charly Black show held in Harare.
